Cherokee and
surrounding counties are the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. The elevation in this
area may range from 1200 to 5000 feet which allows for over 100 varieties of tress and
thousand different kind of wild plants and flowers. The summertime here is wonderful. The
temperature may vary between the mountains and the valley, but ranges from 60 degrees in
the morning to 80 degrees during the day on the average.
Usually the winter temperatures may dip somewhere between 20
and 40 degrees, and snowfall is just enough to make the winter weather interesting.
The four counties in our area are
surrounded by seven lakes, of which Lake Nantahala is one of the highest elevation lakes
this side of the Mississippi. The cold waters are great for mountain trout, pike, bass,
catfish and others.

Which
is it? Smoky or Smokey?
We spell it both ways on this web site. So, if you're searching for real
estate, land and homes and in the "Smokey" mountains,
you'll be sure to find us. Both are common spellings. But if you want to be
correct about it, spell it the way the National Park Service does — the
Great Smoky Mountains.
Smokey the Bear, on the other hand, spells his name the other way.
And if you're wondering about "Smokeys", "Smokys" or "Smokies," they're all
correct.
